Hi,
Love your website, especially the trauma confessions.
The Trauma I need identified is actually my brother's. He saw a short film, where a brother and sister find a very deep dark hole in the ground and could hear movement at the bottom. At first they send down a flashlight in a bucket, they get back gold coins and a note asking for, "Eats."
They keep sending things down until the whatever is down in the hole does not send gold coins back in return. The brother gets angry and decides to go down the hole via a rope to complain. From the perspective of the sister we see the brother reach the bottom, but then his flashlight goes out.
The sister pulls the rope up and there is a note attached to it. The note states, "Thanks for the eats."
Regards,
— Robert
UPDATE: NAME THAT TRAUMA SOLVED! Let's all give a round of thanks to reader Rabs for knowing it is the episode "Thanksgiving" from the T.V. series AMAZING STORIES!
I'm absolutely shocked that I know this one! It's from the TV show Amazing Stories and the episode is entitled "Thanksgiving."
Okay, so now that I've had some coffee and what's left of my soul has re-entered my body this morning, I can give a few more details:
The episode stars Kyra Sedgwick and David Carradine. David plays Kyra's evil step dad who runs a gas station in the desert somewhere. He's looking for water when the giant pit opens up and the whole "eats" thing happens. He gets greedy for more gold coins and goes down dressed up in a crazy outfit (like for fumigating). When she pulls him back up there's a note attached to him that says something like "thanks for the eats" and the top suddenly bursts open – David has been removed and the entire suit is filled with gold coins.
Ta-da! (at least that's what I can piece together from memory and a quick internet search)
Good job Rabs!
I found the episode here…..

Yes…he sends down a flashlight and gets a hunk of gold in return. When he rides off to town to buy more flashlights, his daughter sends down a dictionary and some food. The creatures use the dictionary to communicate, sending up more gold and asking for more food. When the father returns with a box of flashlights, the creatures declare them not very tasty and refuse to pay. The father go berserk, dons a bio hazard suit and descends the well to kill the monsters. When she pulls him back up, the suit is filled with gold, and the creatures leave a note, thanking her for the food, which, according to the dictionary, must have been 'a turkey.'
Its the right Trauma, Thank you for solving this.
Because of David Carradine's part in North and South as Justin LaMotte, a character I love to hate, I am happy to hear about him being eaten in exchange for gold coins. I wonder if I am the only person who holds a silly grudge against actors for playing villains.
Erin, I know what you mean! I couldn't believe Uma let him off the hook so quickly at the end of Kill Bill…
but any talk of Caradine means I must bring up his role in SONNY BOY…I just have to.
Interestingly, an earlier, B&W version of this same story once appeared on the old Sci-Fi Channel series, Exposure. I may still have it on VHS.
Best not to even mention the whole death by auto-erotic asphyxiation thing….
This was based on one of my favorite short stories, "Hey You Down There!" by Harold Rolseth.
