I just watched on Netflix streaming a great documentary called NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD. It's about the rise of Australian cinema during the 1970s, '80s, and early '90s.
It starts off by discussing the crude sex comedies of Australian cinema that marked the divergence from the creation of critically acclaimed historic dramas. Then the documentary goes into the wild horror and ridiculous action movies. I recognized most of the horror flicks from my youth but I had no idea about the historical context.
I just wanted to let you guys know how good this documentary is and that I've added a lot of the titles mention in it to my Netflix Queue.
Sincerely,
Tom Karpe
UNK SEZ:: Thanks Tom Karpe for providing us with today's STREAM WARRIORS suggestion! I could not agree with you more NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD really is a must see. It's not only immensely entertaining itself but it provides the viewer with a ton of ideas on what to watch next!
I'll second that opinion! This was a documentary that I saw upon its release and was not disappointed. It covered a lot of films I already loved and turned me on to many obscure films I'd never seen. It's a terrific documentary of a unique period in cinematic history, and I couldn't recommend it more highly.
This totally brings me back to my 8 year old self sitting on top of my parent's '72 Chevy Caprice station wagon with faux wood paneling and ski rack at the Springfield, NJ drive-in off Rt. 22. After watching the burnt hand of Mel "Mad Max" Gibson's buddy spring out from under his hospital linen, I was never the same. Thanks, folks, for exposing us to the real world rather than sheltering us like a set of fine China you lock up in a cabinet and never use for fear it might chip.
Being a fan of these movies (Ozploitation), it prompted me to buy "Not Quite Hollywood" when it came out.
It's a fun watch, I refer to it occasionally to find a whacko movie to watch.
Brought back memories for me of "Road Games". Saw that when I was a kid and it scared the heck out of me. But then, so did "Mad Max"….
