When I was a kid, 2 music videos made me wish I still wore diapers: "Land of Confusion" by GENESIS and "Rockit" by HERBIE HANCOCK. The former freaked me out – giant ugly Republican puppets flailing about, doing evil nasty things…and the T.V. show featuring them didn't help either. It got so bad I couldn't even hear the song without shuddering until I was in my teens.
"Rockit"…self explanatory. Empty house, freaky beat, robots….I still won't watch that thing.
Excellent videos, excellent music. I just don't see that kind of creativity in music or filmmaking these days.
I was just talking about Rockit with my boyfriend. He'd only heard this song for the first time a couple of months ago when I played it for him! Can you believe it?!? It's one of the great pick me up songs and I adore the video too. It's pretty wicked!
I love the song Rockit, but the video always freaked me out. Mannequins creep me out, so I think that is part of the problem.
The first used puppets from a Britcom called "Spitting Image" where rubber puppets would be satirical. And they had a story arc called "The President's Brain is Missing" which was about Ronald Regan (Even though it's now considered pretty bad taste as he developed Alzheimer's later in life.) and featured George Bush, Sr. as a turkey. Yes, a turkey. The video did scare me as a kid, especially Nana Mads and her singing stomach. (Of course, the second time Nana Mads freaked me out was her "Bedtime Stories" video where her eyes and mouth were juxtaposed on her face…-shudder-)
Second one, I knew a girl who said she threw up after she saw the video. But I feel it's like an installation at a modern art gallery.
The leg robots in "Rockit" were a bit creepy to me as was the one setup where one robot keeps slapping another one in the back when it tries to sit up. I loved the "Land of Confusion" video. I was my then early fortysomething mother who was creeped out by the video! She's a diehard democrat who couldn't stand Reagan/Bush and she felt that what went on in the video ACTUALLY went on in the WhiteHouse!
