YES YES YES!
I have been doing some therapy and think I know why this one strikes a chord with some people.
The idea of the scene is being spoilt with toys and affection, to satisfy some underlying need which is not being properly addressed.
The need in me was missing a caregiver who had looked after me between the ages of 0 and 3, but who left.
I believe I missed her a lot, but rather than being told that people have to leave, I was spoilt with affection and toys, until one day, my mother had had enough and hit me.
From there on in, the child catcher threw fear into me like nothing else.
Hope this helps others!
This was one of those movies they played on TV every year and I'd think "oh how I LOVE this movie!" THEN The Child Catcher would show up and I'd be like "Oh crap! I forgot about him!"
I felt the same way about the Oompah Loompahs in WILLY WONKA. They scared the crap out of me!
