Dude. This is a fantastic interpretation. It gave me goosebumps. It reminds me of why I chose to study folklore in uni all those years ago. Helen Lyle being the one who introduced young and impressionable me to what folklore was and how much deeper it goes than just the surface of the story. Thank you so much for sharing this! I have a strong need to go watch Candyman again…
You might appreciate Walter Chaw's thoughts on Candyman: https://www.filmfreakcentral.net/ffc/2021/08/candyman-2021.html
(It's a review of the new one, but he writes A LOT about the original first.)
raphaeladidas – Wow, Chaw’s analysis of the original film is excellent. I don’t know if I agree on the new film, as I haven’t seen it yet.
SmallDarkCloud — Chaw's best criticism is, I think, the best film criticism out there. I got turned on to him by his review of Dawn of Justice, which I still think deserves some kind of award: https://www.filmfreakcentral.net/ffc/2016/03/batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice.html
