Ever since that WITCH movie strolled into town I keep hearing folks talking about "arthouse horror." Now, I'm not one to jump on a limiting label but if a buzz term helps a lesser seen gem get a leg up in the notoriety department, I'm all for it! I mean arthouse horror has been around forever, right? I'm sure not everyone would agree on what is and isn't arthouse horror but around here our motto is "Horror is where you find it" and I think we all know art is in the eye of the beholder as well. The way I see it, as long as someone is either rolling their eyes or checking their watches, you're doing something right! Anyway, below are 20 images from 20 movies that I figured could wear official arthouse horror t-shirts if they wanted to. How many do you recognize? And if I missed a favorite of yours, please feel free to share it!

Since there is just one left (#3), I’m going to give it to you so that we can all start our weekend with no cares or worries…
#3 is…. TALES FROM THE GIMLI HOSPITAL (1988)….
TALES is on YouTube and its less than an hour long so let’s watch it::::
P.S.
If any of you fine folks have a title that would fit in this bunch that you’d like to add please do below!
I’m kind of sad I forgot ALEX DE LA IGLESIA (DAY OF THE BEAST, DANCE WITH THE DEVIL, LAST CIRCUS & WITCHING AND BITCHING) because he's awesome too.
Otherwise, best weekend to all and fantastic job!!!!!!
I would add Phase IV(that's right, the ant movie!) and Neither the Sea Nor the Sand (aka The Exorcism of Hugh) to the already impressive list…
Brother Bill,
Phase IV sounds good to me and I’ve never heard of NEITHER THE SEA NOR THE SAND, I’ll have to check that out!
Also:
Al P. from Facebook added these titles all of which I heartily agree with:
DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS, ALUCARDA, ONIBABA, INCUBUS (1966) and LEMORA: A CHILD’S TALE OF TERROR
Great picks!
Oh and I wish I remembered…
BUG (20006)
ooh-ooh-ooh (raising hand back up) also:
Images (Robert Altman, 1972), Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010), 13 Tzameti (2005) and Enter The Void (2009) (Enter the void is streaming on Netflix… and has literally The Best Opening Title Sequence Ever Made Ever)
I'm surprised you omitted Don't Look Now, and the ancient classics The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu. (I was able to identify a very few, but at least I got the bumper, getting it on the second thought — the first thought was Werewolf of London.)
Is Argento too roadhouse to be art house?
BB,
All great additions! I’m so t with you on ENTER THE VOID. That movie kind of blew up my eyeballs. I want to watch it a gain but it’s such an experience, I’ not sure I’m ready yet to go back there.
Smalps.
My heart is always with DON’T LOOK NOW. I was going to put it in but we just covered it a couple weeks ago and I didn’t want to sound like a broken record. I think we can add some ARTENTO for sure. I really wasn’t trying to do the complete history of Arthouse- I was just started with 10 random images and then I got a little carried away.
But now that you mention NOSFERATU, I have to add the 1979 Herzog version.
Some others I thought of:
EXCISION (2012) and STARRY EYES (2014) which I just mentioned in THE PIN review
THE WITCH WHO CAMEFROM THE SEA (1976)
And I’ve got a soft spot for WENDINGO (2001)
Also LOST HIGHWAY is up there representing for all of DAVID LYNCH’s movies. I tried not to mention a director more than once.
This subject actually deserves its own website! If you guys think of any more please just keep adding to the list! I’m going to be coming back here in the future for viewing ideas!
And of course REPULSION..
And THE HONEYMOON KILLERS
SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE.
