Hi!
Hoping you can help! Some idiot managed to take me to a scary movie when I was about 5 years old. I've thought of it many times and I can't figure out what it was.
It was in a movie theater in probably 1987 or 1988, Kansas City. All I know is that generally, it was about a family, no monsters or magic or anything. There were several stabbing scenes. The worst I can remember was on the stairs in the family house. There were dead family members all over the house and I believe when the last female is killed the movie ends. Or maybe she survives…?
Let me know if that sounds familiar at all. It's hard to do an effective search when you don't know any specifics.
Thanks,
Could it be The Stepfather (1987)? The climax takes place on a staircase and involves a knife, a female and a serial killer who murders the families he marries into. Not a ton of onscreen knife murders in it though.
Also House by the Cemetery comes to mind, but that came out in 1981 and likely would not have been playing in a theater.
Gonzo72,
thanks for those great suggestions!
I've been looking through 1987 flicks and the two that stuck out to me…
maybe THE CURSE ? That's got a crazy stab-happy family…

or maybe even HELLRAISER? lots of staircase action there.,.
Yes, The Stepfather was what came to mind for me also. Hope you find it.
If this isn’t The Stepfather, then I have a long shot guess. There’s no family, but The House on Sorority Row has a climax on a staircase, and an ambiguous “did she survive or not?†ending.
On re-watching the ending, I realize I misremembered a movie I've seen three times. The climax of The House on Sorority Row involves a ladder, not a staircase. Funny how my memory can jumble the details.
It's probably not Alice, Sweet Alice but that one has a great stabbing scene on a staircase.
Could be the "Dreamhouse" section of "Screamtime" (1983). Lots of stabbing and littered bodies in that.
