Hi..
You guys have helped me out twice in the past, and I'm back for my third request. Here is what I saw that scarred my brain forever.
I was probably 7 or 8 years old, so this would've been in the early 70s. And I believe I was at a drive-in with my parents. There was a coming attraction playing before the movie, and one image from that trailer burned into my mind. It was a toy robot – the old fashioned metal toy robots that every little boy owned decades ago. The toy robot was walking, when suddenly something injured it (my memory is fuzzy when it comes to what type of injury the robot sustained). Anyway, the robot fell over – dying – and from a gaping wound in its metal belly, GUTS STARTED TO SPILL OUT! Holy crap, we're talking bloody, red, gory GUTS! The robot had actual intestines!
Any ideas? Besides that one freaky image, the memory is very murky. But I'm about 98% sure that I didn't dream this. This film is out there somewhere.
Thanks!
You should look at the "Mannikins of Horror" segment of the 1972 anthology ASYLUM. It's free on Amazon Prime right now I think. I'm pretty sure that's your trauma.
That's gotta be Asylum from 1972, the wraparound story. Near the end, there is a miniature robot/doll with a human face that gets stomped on. Out pour plenty of guts.
I thought this sounded vaguely familiar so I looked it up — WOW. Turns out I never actually saw it but I do remember seeing some kind of commercial or preview back in the day (I was 7 years old in 1972). Looks like a really creepy film, and with an all-star cast to boot! Not sure if this will work, but here's a link to a blog with some images from the movie, including the robot being eviscerated: https://islandofterror.blogspot.com/2013/03/asylum-mannikins-of-horror.html

1:04 in the trailer.
That's gotta be it! You guys are good (and fast)!
Thanks guys! I'm 100% sure that is it. The position of the robot is exactly like I remembered.
The only difference is how my 7 year-old self saw it vs how my 52 year-old self saw it. 7 year-old Gary remembers it being way gorier and more horrifying. But that's it for sure.
I'm so glad to finally put this one to rest! I knew it wasn't a dream.
Whoa, that little robot pulled a Morrie Kessler on that guy! GoodFellas = derivative. Who knew?!
