Hello Kinder Trauma! Thanks for all the good stuff.
I have a scene in my mind from when I was a wee lad in the early seventies and I have no idea from which film it plays. Not much to go on. This is what I see in my mind's eye: Color film. Maybe a HAMMER feel to it. A greenhouse/garden inside of a mansion. I think the decor might have feet a little Victorian or Old South. In the greenhouse are these flowers with small, proboscis like stigma or stamen which are bloody red drippy. These things drank blood. A couple of people are standing around and talking about the flowers, maybe getting ready for a feeding and a murder.
That is all I can remember.
Thanks,
— Snixy
Not an exact match to your description, but 1965's Die, Monster, Die has an old mansion with a greenhouse full of hungry animated plant-monsters. Check out the trailer here (skip to about the :50 mark to see the greenhouse)
sounds like Island Of The Doomed aka Maneater Of Hydra with Cameron Mitchell, directed by Mel Welles.
Yeah, Die Monster Die was my first thought. My other idea was The Mutations (aka The Freakmaker) from 1974, which has some nasty pulsing plants in Donald Pleasance's lab (you can get a glimpse of them at 2:42 into this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9k0MfCGtQo). Other than that, it's possible you're slightly misremembering the Kew Gardens scene from the 1962 Day of the Triffids (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eCmqWDx5A4). The only movie I can recall (besides Little Shop of Horrors, of course) where someone is deliberately fed or sacrificed to a plant is The Womaneater from 1958, but that movie was in B&W and the plant doesn't exactly fit your description (http://www.movieweb.com/dvd/DV7Jk8cfTPGOb7/trailer).
Man Eater of Hydra also had a blood sucking plant.
A quick search turned up this clip for Man Eater of Hydra (aka Island of the Doomed aka La Isla de la muerte). This may be it — the flowers sure look like Snixy's description anyway. Now I want to see this thing — I mean, it's got freaking Cameron Mitchell!
It needs a good DVD release. The ending is so surreal, Cameron Mitchell dying in the vines of the plant, which itself is gushing blood in the rainstorm.
I have that on DVD. Its on an ELVIRA double disc set and the other movie is the excellent under-rated gem THE HOUSE THAT SCREAMED. You can watch the movies with or without ELVIRA segments.
Thanks for all of the cool suggestions, but no match. Man Eater looks close, but I believe the blood plants were in an indoor garden and they did not chase people.
I love this website. Cheers!
Just too obvious, but, the 'Hammer feel' thing reminded me the second episode from 'Dr Terror's House of Horrors'. No getting ready for a murder there, but, as nobody mentioned it…
If it does turn out to be Maneater of Hydra, it wont suprise me. I had this same vision/memorey for years until I located the film. Also had to search out Frankenstein Created Woman as I'd seen them both around the same time. Took me 25 years as I was 3 at the time of seeing both.
So I think this search is a bust. I'm not going on much as I noted above. Just a fragment of a memory, but I would recognize it. Perhaps it was something out of a Night Gallery episode.
Anyway… I found this interesting, comprehensive faq about various carnivorous plants on Film and TV. Check it out.
