Traumatic mission to name my trauma!!!
6 Years ago I left this trauma (HERE) in the hands of the good folks at Kindertrauma but have still never managed to find the culprit…it's time to try again!!!
I remember seeing this on TV in the early nineties ( it was in colour). Hope I'm not getting scenes confused but I'm sure it was a film which initially begins at some archaeological dig maybe in Egypt then focuses on a family either in England or America who are affected by a curse or possession related to the dig? I'm sure their was some kind of bad spirit and hallucinations involved but one scene I remember really vividly after all these years was of a conversation between a woman and her lover – she is laying naked full frontal in a bath (think she had red hair) and he crouched beside her clothed (Either one of them may have been possessed). This was so long ago I couldn't tell you if it was trashy or art-house…whatever it was made an impact on my young mind.
…and I'm sure there may have been a scene where something evil appears to man as he is driving in his car windscreen or looks down from the top of the car into the windscreen???
Suggestions I've had and followed up on are – The Kiss, Playroom, Gargoyles, Manhattan Baby…it was none of these. I wouldn't rule out it being an episode of a TV show either.
HELP!!!
T,
Hope we can find it this time?
Have you tried THE RUNESTONE from 1991?
Here is a review:

I'm pretty sure you're describing Born Of Fire (1987), and I'm not surprised nobody's been able to help you, as I'm pretty sure only you and I saw it.

I checked the IMDB page for the scary guy in the film and this appears to be the only movie he ever made, but I remember him best from two fantastic Cabaret Voltaire videos, Sensoria and I Want You, in which he plays Nosferatu!

I hope this helps.
Made the assumption that your movie was shot in Cairo. Take a look at these movies. I made sure that they were in chronological order for ease of scanning. These two seemed to decent candidates for your film.

1980 The Awakening
1982 Manhattan Baby
Good luck with your search.
Fenius,
Now I really want to see BORN OF FIRE!
That looks awesome.
And I love Cabaret Voltaire.
Hi Unkle Lancifer — Glad I could pique your interest! I have to warn you, though: Born Of Fire is truly an odd experience. I used to spend a lot of time in my teenaged years trolling the cruddiest of our local video rental places in search of obscure fantasy and horror films, and this was one of the weirder discoveries I ever made. I like it a lot, but your mileage may vary. I was amazed to discover that it made it to DVD, too:

Meanwhile, I think I found a screen grab of the bath tub scene Tristan described. Be warned, it's hosted in a location that suggests their main interest is nudity, so don't click if you're bothered by the prospect of breasts:

There's a car accident in the film, too, caused by the guy from the Cabaret Voltaire videos showing up on the roof of Peter Firth's car, though I can't find a shot of it on the net…
Could it be "Sphinx" (1981)?
WOW WOW WOW OK…just seen all these pointers so will let ya know if any of them are a success!! Thanks guys…good to get some fresh recommendations…very intriguing..I'm a huge Cabaret Voltaire fan too so can't wait to embark on this exploration!!!
Fenius!!! I just checked the screen shots!!! That's it!!! That's what has been in my mind for the last 20 odd years!!! Born Of Fire it is. I'm astounded this has been SOLVED!!! Thank you 🙂
You're welcome, Tristan! I know what it's like to search hopelessly for a movie for decades: I missed the opening credits of the best ghost story I ever saw on film when it aired on PBS sometime in the 80's, and didn't find out until about ten years ago that it was an episode of British TV series Shades Of Darkness, called The Intercessor. It would have been a prime candidate for someone's Kindertrauma, both chilly and upsettingly sad. It was worth the time it took to track it down, though: it turned out to be every bit as good as I remembered.
