T.V.:THE BRADY BUNCH episode when Bobby idolizes Jesse James. Mr. Brady has the old man whose father was killed by J.J. come talk to him to show him J.J. was not a good person. At the end, Bobby dreams that he's on a train in the old West with the rest of the Bradys, and J.J. and his gang ride up on horses and get on board. Bobby is initially excited, till J.J. starts shooting his family! The guy playing J.J. keeps yelling "Bang, Bang" when he would shoot someone.
Movies:
- SALEM'S LOT: Ralphie and Mark Glick floating outside the windows! Holy crap!
- RACE WITH THE DEVIL: The initial Devil Worship scene. Creepy chanting and yelling.
- THE HOWLING: The scene with the silhouettes of werewolves standing upright on 2 legs, howling. 2 legs?? And the fact they were even transforming in the daytime! That was a game changer for me! Not even safe during the day!
The movie posters for CAT PEOPLE (never saw the movie). I was in N.Y. City for the first time, around 6 years old, and that movie was out. The posters were on bus stops etc. I think it was NASTASSJA KINSKI that was in the poster (i didn't know who she was at the time of course, it was just a creepy poster). The poster was a combination of erotic and scary, both confusing for a six year old.
Book Cover: COMA. My mother was reading it. I was maybe 4. What the hell was with all the naked bodies suspended???
Thanks,

UNK SEZ: Thanks Bill B. for the excellent (and timely-we were just talking about CAT PEOPLE!) traumafessions! I too was disturbed by that episode of THE BRADY BUNCH. That cardboard dream train was strangely surreal & there's something so wrong with seeing an entire family shot in the back like that! Stay tuned folks, Bill B. also sent us some NAME THAT TRAUMAS to figure out which we shall post tomorrow. I think I know the answer to at least one! (I hope!)
Oh man, that Brady Bunch episode is definitely Kindertraumatic! Even now, as an adult I find it to be pretty creepy. Maybe even creepier…
I think this is also the episode where Mike tells Bobby to get a better role model, like Kareem Abdul Jabar (sp?) and Bobby says something like, "Fat chance of me being 6 foot 4 and black." Love it!
I never saw this Brady ep, but I'm suddenly reminded of "The Family Affair" episode where one of the youngest has nightmares about trolls coming out from under the bed. FROM UNDER THE BED!!! Why would a family show EVER have something scary under the bed??? As if Mrs. Beasley wasn't scary enough.
Yep, those floating vampire kids in the original "Salem's Lot" were creepy! For book covers the one for "Audrey Rose" creeped me out as a kid:

And for some reason this one for the book "Sybil" made me uncomfortable when I looked at it:

And yet 30 years later I have the movie poster to "The Descent" hanging on my wall!
Oh, the "Coma" cover situation: {WARNING: SPOILERS}
(If I get some of this wrong feel free to correct)
In the book, and movie adaptation, a hospital had a room set aside by a black market organ donor organization that had carbon monoxide fed into the O2 tanks during surgery. The patients on the operating table would inhale the gas while in surgery and they'd wind up in a vegetative state as a result. The doctors involved would say is was an unfortunate irreversible side effect from the anesthesia and the victims would be "stored" in a room. They were suspended by wires going through the more solid bones where they would be kept alive via I.V. tubes till their organs would be sold to the highest bidders. After that the victims families were told the patients died.
Heck yeah – that Brady Bunch ep was creepy. That still is priceless BTW, Bobby still smiling away as Jesse plugs Greg with an imaginary bullet. I believe that there was another episode where the Bunch was lost in a ghost town out west – maybe related to the Grand Canyon trip?
And FoT – thanks for the Coma spoiler – I always wondered what the deal with the wires was.
I believe that the direction Mike Lookinland was given was to be scared even though they're dying in a really goofy way…
I am OBSESSED with THE BRADY BUNCH. One of my all time favorite shows.
For me the scareist ep was the one where the girls dare the boys to sleep in the attic and they rig up a ghost out of a dry cleaning bag. They set up a tape recorder (its obviously Marcia voicing the ghost) to have the ghost say "I need aiiiiiiiiiir" I remember before I had the box sets watching the show on NICK AT NITE and whenever that ep played putting the "I need aiiiiiir" part on my best friends answering machine (that ep terrified him a kid). I also used to call my sister whenever the Davy Jones ep went on , even if it was 2 A.M. (Its not scary but that song Davy sings RAWKS!)
^ by the way, if you watch that JESSE JAMES ep on TV they cut the line about Wilt Chamberlain being black. I guess they find the fact Wilt Chamberlain is black and Bobby ISNT "racist"/un-P.C.
Re: The Coma picture
The bodies were actually kept in an entirely separate facility which was only quasi-secret as harvesting organs wasn't illegal (but deliberately comatizing people certainly was!) The facility is shown being toured by a group of investors or medical students or something. And I don't think the wires were attached to their bones, the bodies were just resting on platforms held up by the wires.
Effective thriller for its time, but a bit ridiculous & silly now!
Trivia Note: One of the suspended bodies shown in close-up was played by Tom Selleck in his first movie role!
Hail,
Ed Harris' first film role was in COMA too!
I haven't seen COMA in a while. I didn't remember that Joanna Kerns was in it too!

Very late post, but here it is anyway 🙂
I'm so pleased I wasn't the only one traumatized by that BB episode 🙂 I always thought I was strange. The goofiness and the fact that it's obviously fake (the set, that is) gives it a surreal feel that makes the scene almost scarier. And looking closely at the picture at the top of this post, I've come to the conclusion that JJ almost looks a little like Andy Robinson (Scorpio in "Dirty Harry"). Makes it even scarier…
"Race With the Devil" scares the tar out of me as well. It's the ending, with the flames surrounding the RV, that gets me. Brrr. "Coma" gets under my skin, too; that scene where Tom Selleck is lying gutted on the gurney…
