There was this episode of THE CAROL BURNETT where they show her being sucked down a bathtub drain. They show her slinking all through the drainpipes. I had to be three or four when I saw this. It took my parents months to even get me in a bathtub to take a bath without screaming my bloody head off. Even to this day, knowing rationally that it can't happen, I get that weird feeling around tub drains.
I don't remember that sketch, but I do remember being freaked out by the garbage disposal scene in The Incredible Shrinking Woman (with another genius female comedienne, Lily Tomlin)! Of course I new I was too big to actually fall in, but what if my hand got caught in there and someone flicked the switch??
I'm also a bit of a neat freak, so the idea of all those nasty leftovers being dumped on poor, tiny Lily gave me the serious heebie jeebies as well.
I was always more worried about things coming UP the drain…
Mr. C,
Whatever you do, don't see ROLLING THUNDER! Â I should've mentioned it for this Traumafession but I hadn't remembered the title at the time. Â It deserves its own 'fession!
What I remember scaring me on Carol Burnett was Jowls (sp?), which was about a shark who came through the bathtub drain and ate ya! I wonder if it's the same sketch? All I know is Jowls scared the living bejeezus otta me!
I don't remember seeing this, but I remember a song we sang in kindergarten about a girl being sucked down the drain. I found it scary as a child.
ANNA MAE
Anna Mae where are you going? Upstairs to take a bath. Anna Mae with legs like toothpicks and a neck like a giraffe.
Anna Mae stepped in the bathtub Anna Mae pulled out the plug Oh my goodness, oh my soul there goes Anna Mae down that hole Anna Mae! Anna Mae! Glug!
Anna Mae how did you get there? Did you slide down on the soap? Anna Mae don't lose your patience Anna Mae don't give up hope
Anna Mae are you still down there? If so, here comes a rope. Oh my goodness, oh my soul here comes Anna Mae up that hole Anna Mae! Anna Mae! Glug!
SBD, I love me some ROLLING THUNDER! The whole "Learn To Tove The Rope" speech is classic…gives me chills every time I hear it.
But, yeah…losing a hand that way really freaks my shit!
OOPS, that should read, "Learn To LOVE The Rope."
THE RUGRATS actually had a good episode about being scared of getting sucked down the drain. Chucky and Tommy fill the bathtub with sand so they wont get sucked down into bathtub Hell.
i was never afraid of goin' DOWN the drain…I was scared of the '80s version of THE BLOB coming OUT! That movie may not have been great…but wow…that sink scene has Stayed With Me!
I think Mr. Rogers did a whole episode about that fear.
