Hi, I really enjoy your site, so I figured I should contribute…
One of many things that scared me as a kid was one of the early covers for THE EXORCIST novel by WILLIAM PETER BLATTY.
I was a friend's house and spotted it on a shelf and found the image of the girl so scary it gave me nightmares for days. Yet every time I would go to his place I would find some excuse to have a peek, compelled to face my fear.
Compelled or not, I did not want to be left alone in that room with the book, no matter how many lights were on.
Even now, I find that image more frightening than LINDA BLAIR in the DICK SMITH makeup (with no disrespect intended).
Best,
DK
P.S.: I have another story to tell about a show that scared me as a kid, but I'll save that story for next time.
UNK SEZ:: Thanks DK, I've always been fascinated by that book cover too. Have you ever heard THIS HERE tidbit before?
Brrrrrrr! I got that super creepy cover on my paperback when I was 11 or so (I was a weird kid, ok?). Thanks for the link, Unk. I think I'll revisit Joel Delaney this weekened. But he ain't invited to the beach house, no sir!
This reminds me of a conversation I had with my aunt on scariest books we ever read. She said she was reading The Exorcist and got to a particularly scary part. At the point she got so frightened she ran to the kitchen and stuck the book in the freezer. Why the freezer? Well, why not the freezer?
Man so from what I hear this is a really scary cover. I personally never read the book but I have only watched the movie…with a friend…alone…with the lights off…at midnight…and that gaping hole of a closet just staring me as I would wait for Linda Blair to get me. Sadly this was just a couple months ago and im fourteen…
Well, I'm not going to pretend to know what's good for ya Missy. But I was a bit younger than you when I first saw The Exorcist and I turned out okay. Good to see you're already classy enough to be reading sites like this one. You are on your way!
For some reason it never registered to me that was the Regan on the cover. As a child I thought that was the demon with 'a panty on his head'.
I have that book in paperback. The cover is awesome :D. Sadly I'm gonna have to get a new one someday. I bought the book back when I was a prude and whited out all the swearing. Totally defaced the book. Now I need a new one. I still have the old one, though.
