I searched for SPITTING IMAGE on your site and was surprised that you have never posted about this British Television Series featuring hideous puppet caricatures of celebrities and political figures. I was exposed to the show in 1986 when they ran a special in the US. I was only in kindergarten at the time, and I remember being so frightened by the characters that I begged my mom to change the channel.
She was enjoying the humor and of course didn't find the characters as frightening as I did, and told me I had to change the channel myself if I wanted to watch something else. Our T.V. had no remote which meant I would have to approach the television set and get closer to these demonic beings so, seized with fright, I had to sit through the entire show. After that, I was afraid these hideous creatures would pop up from the crack between my bed and the wall so I began sleeping with the sheet over my head.
Good call, Joey B! This terrified me as a youngster too, because they were all so *hideous*. Plus: puppets, man. Puppets are always creepy!
To quote Michael Ian Black, "Everyone takes protesters who use puppets seriously." 🙂
Anyway, I recall one episode was "The President's Brain is Missing" (Which was probably in bad taste as Reagan was revealed to have Alzheimer's disease later on) and Bush Sr. was portrayed as a turkey. You know, this might be one of the reasons I love British comedy…though I was more partial to "The Young Ones" at that time. 🙂
Good grief, Father of Tears! Good GRIEF!
I was quite torn with this show. Never sure weather I found it funny or terrifying. Gotta agree with LaDracul, The Young Ones is perfect British comedy.
You know, one of these days I ought to put together my Traumafession. It's good for the soul.
