I was so scared of this movie because of commercials that I never saw it….the commercials scared the heck out of me as a kid where my brother would tease me undyingly about it even though we'd never seen the movie!
Now, I watched it today.
Yawn.
To me it's SO SO STRANGE how things can be SO SCARY to you one time of your life and a joke another. Clearly the whole "Tall Man" thing was spooky…but that metal ball that chases people, that one was what got me in my youth. Of course, the final scene is a good shocker….reminiscent of FREDDY KRUEGER's moves which of course CAME AFTER…..all in all it's a '70s classic with tempera paint for blood in two colors, yellow and red.
UNK SEZ: Funny you should mention "The Tall Man", it's his 30th Birthday!
I loved Phantasm but actually I spent half the time laughing my ass off. The giant fly that crawled up the back of Mike's head and his brother trying to shove it down the garbage disposal and the phrase "little and brown and low to the ground" still make me chuckle to this day.
Oh yeah and I actually had a bit of a crush on Reggie Bannister. Am I the only one?
I didnt get around to watching this one til I was a grown up and surprisingly it DID scare me. When I recruit people into watching it I do sorta wince when that puppet bug shows up. That part is really corny!
Ahhh Phantasm. Just so, so weird. I did not see it 'til I was a teenager but my cousin saw it when I was younger and thoughtfully described it in detail to me one dark night. What I imagined was far more terrifying than the film itself, although the film has its merits, IMHO.
I remember when I was a teenager my friends came over with PHANTASM 2 and put it on and I was like "What the HELL is going on?!" I just couldnt wrap my mind around it. I really DONT suggest anyone ever watch Part 2 without seeing Part 1 first.Â
Ive seen them all but Part 1 is the only one I find myself going back to.
Mama, I saw Part 2 first as well. I think I did think WTF quite a few times.
The original is effectively terrifying for me. I think it's aged rather well, silly bugs and all.
